Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 14 focus

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 14 focuses on conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. It is essential to protect coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, in addition to taking measures for their restoration, in order to ensure healthy and productive oceans.

In the case of Potássio do Brasil, a wholly owned subsidiary of Brazil Potash, the company is implementing the Autazes Potash Project in the Amazon, surrounded by rivers and the largest tropical forest on the planet. In the context of SDG 14, the fertilizer will be distributed to the country through river transport in barges using an existing route, which will not increase carbon emissions by more than 200 thousand tons of CO2, with the creation of a new route, reducing the transport of distances exceeding 20,000 km when imported from abroad. By reducing maritime transport, resulting from potash imports, the Project will help minimize the risk of damage to marine environments.

As a “Corporate Citizen”, Potássio do Brasil is committed to implementing more than 30 socioeconomic and environmental programs as part of its ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) strategy, with the aim of avoiding, mitigating and offsetting potential social, economic and environmental impacts. These include initiatives to maintain air, soil and water quality, as well as actions aimed at conserving biodiversity and caring for the forest.

The Autazes Potash Project, which began constructions after receiving installation licenses, has an estimated annual production of 2.2 million tonnes of Potassium Chloride. This is a significant figure considering Brazil’s current dependency on importing this fertilizer.

Brazil relies heavily on imports, consuming around 13 million tonnes annually. Potássio do Brasil, a subsidiary of Brazil Potash, aims to meet approximately 20% of the country’s needs.

Currently, Brazil’s only Potassium Chloride mine, located in Sergipe, produces around 300,000 tonnes per year, covering just less than 3% of the national market.
